Tips for the California DMV Permit Test

You’ve taken a certified driver’s ed. class, and now you have to take the written exam. Knowing what to expect can alleviate any pre-test nerves and stress.

It is always a good idea to review the California Driver Handbook since all of the test questions are taken from the current handbook. There are 46 questions on the California DMV permit test, and you must answer 38 correctly in order to pass. The test is multiple choice, and there is only one correct answer. According to the California DMV website, the other options on the knowledge test will be either obviously wrong or they will not pertain to the question asked. It is, however, important to read the questions carefully so that you do not misunderstand what is being asked.

Take one or more practice tests to build confidence. The more you practice, the more familiar you will be with the format of the test, the types of questions that will be asked, and the time it takes you to complete the test.

The California DMV permit test is available in a number of languages, so if you are more comfortable taking the test in a language other than English, be sure to check to see if your language is available. The California DMV also offers alternate formats for the written exam. If you are not comfortable with a written format or have special needs, it is advisable to request to take the audio or the person-to-person (where an examiner asks the questions) knowledge test.

The DMV utilizes a touch-screen terminal to administer the test, and it can be taken at any California DMV. Be sure to make an appointment to take the written exam as soon as possible. California DMVs are always busy, so the sooner you make your appointment, the better. You can make your appointment online at the California DMV website or by phone, and you can make your appointment up to 90 days in advance.

The most important thing you can do to pass the written exam is to be prepared. Review, practice, and don’t be nervous! Contact us for more information on the California driver exam and to take free practice tests. We want to see you pass your written exam so that you can become a skilled driver.
