The DMV's NC Sign Test
Before you can obtain a permanent drivers license, the state of North Carolina requires all applicants to pass the DMV road sign test. As the name implies, this test is meant to determine a driver’s ability to interpret and follow directions given by road signs. It’s one of several tests given to new drivers and residents of the state, and the only test given to both groups. New drivers must also pass the written and vision tests, as well as the road test later on. As with the DMV’s written test, a thorough understanding of how to operate a vehicle safely on the road is essential to passing.
The North Carolina sign test is administered by a DMV examiner. In order to pass, the testee must identify at least nine out of twelve signs by sight correctly. The examiner will provide pictures of each sign for the testee to identify and explain orally. These include stop signs, speed limit signs, warning signs, and other common road signs anyone might encounter. Images and explanations of all signs on the test can be found in the North Carolina Driver’s License Manual. As always, taking a pretest beforehand is one of the best ways to ensure a successful outcome. Testing your knowledge in a consequence-free environment can help you retain and recall information when it’s needed later on. Once you’ve studied the material, be sure to utilize our practice test in order to maximize your chances of passing on the first try.
